What Should I Wear in my Sauna?

Posted on 07 September 2020

what should you wear in a saunaHome saunas are becoming more and more accessible thanks to companies that sell custom sauna kits. With an at-home sauna, it is easier than ever to gain all the benefits of regular sauna use from the comfort of your home or backyard. Unlike at a spa, a home sauna allows you to utilize the space however you see fit. When you consider how you will utilize your home sauna, you might wonder what is the right clothing etiquette when using your sauna. In this blog post, we have provided some helpful tips for what you should and shouldn’t wear in indoor and outdoor saunas.

What You Should Wear

A sauna is supposed to be a safe and calming space for you to relax and unwind. With that in mind, you will always want to do what makes you feel the most comfortable, especially when it comes to clothing.

The first step before using a sauna is to take off your street clothes and shower. Removing sweat and dirt before using a sauna will help you to avoid stains and dirt accumulation on the benches and backrests of your sauna.

Following your shower, you can choose what will make you feel the most relaxed in your home sauna. A bathing suit is a popular choice because you can also wear it in the shower or pool that you might use in between your sauna sessions. Some people also choose to use a towel to protect them from the heat of the bench. Cotton towels can help to wick sweat from the body and provide you with a soft cushion between yourself and the bench. Otherwise, any loose-fitting cotton clothing is a great option, such as a sundress or t-shirt and shorts. Thanks to the privacy of an at-home sauna, you can also choose to wear nothing while you soak up the heat.

In terms of footwear, we recommend wearing shower shoes or sandals outside of the sauna, to protect yourself from slippery tiles. However, inside of the sauna you should never wear shoes. This might drag in dirt or debris from the outside that will stain the wooden floor.

What You Shouldn't Wear

Although it is tempting to jump in the sauna right after a workout, it is important to avoid workout clothes or anything made with synthetic material. Clothing made with spandex or other plastic can melt at high temperature and should be avoided in a sauna. It is also important to remove any jewelry made of metal that can heat up and burn the skin while using the sauna. Finally, you will want to avoid any tight fighting clothes that will be uncomfortable in the heat.
